This Christmas, the Doctor teams up with a comic-book superhero in New York for a heroic special titled, The Return of Doctor Mysterio.

The Return of Doctor Mysterio sees the Twelfth Doctor, as played by Peter Capaldi, teaming up with an investigative journalist, played by Charity Wakefield (Wolf Hall), and a superhero to save New York from a deadly alien threat.

“Doctor Misterio”, as many fans will know is the name given to “Doctor Who” in Latin America. And Peter loves that name!

Justin Chatwin (Orphan Black, War of the Worlds) plays Grant - check out the G on his suit above. Chatwin comments on joining the Doctor Who team for the special:

“Working with the amazing people at Doctor Who has been one of the most fun and rewarding projects I’ve ever had the pleasure of being involved with.”

Matt Lucas (who returns as Nardole) will also be joining the cast of the special with Adetomiwa Edun (Lucifer, Bates Motel), German actor Aleksandar Jovanovic and Logan Huffman (US sci-fi series, V).

The Return of Doctor Mysterio is a 60-minute special written by Steven Moffat and directed by Ed Bazalgette (The Woman Who Lived and The Girl Who Died).

Doctor Who, Series 9 Episode 12 of 12

    By the Tripwire LiveBlog Team

Well, my pretties, Santa Steven really pulled a surprise from his Christmas sack last week didn't he? Now the Doctor's on Gallifrey, and not happy. So what next? Well, we here at the LiveBlog have long reckoned that there's some stuff about Clara that needs to be resolved. Where are all the 'other' Claras who were scattered across time, for example, now the original is brown-bread? Coal Hill School is the focus for the Who spin-off, but the teacher mortality rate is a bit scary. We don't feel we're done with her yet. We also feel some Missy magic might occur, we know that Mayor Me will be back, and surely that's a Dalek in the trailer. And a Cyberman - although neither look their best. Well, not long to go now... See us here at 20:00 hours for the season finale...

Hello everyone, I’m very much afraid that from this point on there are spoilers for episode eleven of series nine of Doctor Who.

Once again the Dr Who crew are playing with the format of the show, leaving the Doctor (almost) alone to face an (almost) perfect prison. We know Capaldi is a compelling presence, so the fact that he carries the story off (almost) single-handedly while engaging in its own right, is no surprise. A more intriguing question would be how previous incarnations might have coped with the challenge.

So, presumably you have by now checked out all the previews and realise we are in for a grim 50+ minutes of the Doctor being chased around what looks like a monastery by the Ghost of Christmas yet to Come from A Muppet Christmas Carol. Somewhere in the middle of all this there will be a picture of the late lamented Clara. The Doctor will shout. A lot. There are tasks set up for the Doctor, which will sadly only serve to emphasise his resemblance to Edward Tudorpole, the second presenter of The Crystal Maze. Hello everyone, welcome to the trap street, from this point on there are spoilers for episode ten of series nine of Doctor Who.

Well, that was very… mechanical. We arrive at Clara’s death, something that has been heavily foreshadowed throughout this season and as it was finally presented here. Like our own deaths, we know it is coming eventually, but only seldom know exactly what how it will happen until it is too late.

    Face the Raven

Doctor Who, Series 9 Episode 10 of 12

    By the Tripwire LiveBlog Team

Well, we have two episodes to go to the series finale, and due to considerable and unsubtle hints in every bloody episode it all feels like Clara's going to die, or is already dead. Or alive forever. Or doesn't exist. After last week's episode, who knows what will be pulled from the orifice of dark creativity that is Doctor Who? This week the Doctor is in a "secret pocket of alien life in the middle of London", or Diagon Alley, if you will. Maisie Williams returns as Me, but who's side is she on? And do we care? Last time she was staring out of a photo, with an "Oh yes, I'm watching you, all right!" expression on her face. Which, to be fair appears to be her permanent expression in this show. Is she less wooden in Game of Thrones, or doesn't it really matter there? Who's side is she on? See what I did there?

"They've started to liveblog us, Doctor!"

Well last week was lovely wasn't it? This week we're in an old Doctor Who favourite, a space station – which probably functions in the same way as an underground base, an undersea base, or a base of any kind really – in Doctor Who. Nothing good will come of it! Who designs all these bases, where you constantly get cut off from your companions? We've had two this series already. Is there a future architect who was traumatized by Cube?

Reece Shearsmith is our guest star for this week, reunited with his old League of Gentlemen partner Mark Gatiss, who wrote this week's episode. The Daily Mirror has some interesting information about this:

    Doctor Who

Clara looking a little less "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" than usual. So, Bonnie then.

Okay folks, recap time. Osgood is a UNIT scientist, who met Doctors 10, 11 and "War" in The Day of the Doctor, when a Zygon took her form, but was killed, presumed missing, in Death in Heaven, and is now either original Osgood, or her Zygon "sister". Osgood has been caught by the Zygons (and there is no way that phrase just doesn't sound funny). She is the victim of a group of "radicalised" Zygons – insert heavy-handed Islamic metaphors and ISIS styled Zygon flags here – who are unhappy with the terms of the peace treaty agreed in The Day of the Doctor, and want a "land" of their own. Sadly this "land" appears to be Earth. Or possibly Wales, which spent a lot of last episode doubling for Genericstan. Happily the Zygons' shape-changing powers are so good that soldiers (who are aware of these powers) are easily fooled into thinking that their Moms, Dads, Sisters, and children have been instantaneously transported to Genericstan to plead with them from a Shack/Church - still not sure which. As you can imagine this does not go well…

"I can confirm my peril in tonight's episode."

Well, last week went a bit pear-shaped didn't it? For our international readers I should explain that "pear-shaped" is not a good thing. Your liveblog team consists of Peter Mann and Jack Graves, plus assorted snarky passersby, and Mr Graves definitely indicated his displeasure with the direction of last week's episode. It was pretty much a disgrace to TV, making little sense, and possessing plot holes you could drive the coach and horses that "Me" was trying to rob through. This week 20 million of the rubbery and shape shifting Zygons reappear, in what critics are already calling "a heavy-handed parallel about immigration."

Anyhow, we'll be here at 20.15 to liveblog the whole thing. Apparently Clara is in peril. Fancy!

DW9_E6-4-smallHello everyone, I’m here to stand and deliver spoilers for the sixth episode of series nine of Dr Who.

So, comedian and Dr Who guest star Rufus Hound is immortal now. You can insert your own joke about that here.

I really wanted to like this episode. I was really sold on the notion that Ashildr might not like the immortality that had been thrust upon her. I even like her adoption of the new identity of “Me” (which is how she was credited this episode), though it makes referring to her grammatically difficult. But while the idea of “Me” as a resentful immortal was central, somehow the story as a whole didn’t quite gel together into a convincing narrative for me.

    "A bit dark in here...?"

Or “The Second One With Game of Thrones Maisie Williams.” Okay, so now we know that Ms Williams (Ashildr) is (effectively) immortal, is carrying another of the Mire technology chips that will allow her to gift another mortal with living forever. Oops, sorry, SPOILER ALERT! On the other hand, if you're reading this before you saw last weeks episode, why? And babies have their own language. And it's poetic. And, of course, the Doctor speaks it… How would he not? We learned that this Doctor chose his face from Caecilius in the Season 4 episode The Fires of Pompeii, featuring one P Capaldi, where Tennant’s Doctor had a right fit at Donna (cue blubbing) about not changing the future. We've discussed this, and we think it's a heavy-handed pointer that "NO GOOD WILL COME OF THIS!"

Our man in Los Angeles, ROBERT CAVE, takes a look at the fifth episode of the new series of Doctor Who in a weekly review column

Doctor Who Series 9/ Season 35 episode five

Hello everyone, spoilers abound here for the fifth episode of series nine of Doctor Who.

So, when he regenerates, the Doctor can take inspiration for his new face from those he’s met before. This time he thinks he chose his current face to remind him to save people regardless of the risks to time itself. I can’t help but remember how he tried to save Adelaide Brooke in defiance of the laws (or perhaps are they more sort of guidelines?) of time back in The Waters of Mars. That didn’t turn out so well. And why did he choose the face of a Gallifreyan guard who once shot him for his sixth incarnation? Maybe it was as a warning not to trust his fellow Time Lords, who did, let us remember, put that incarnation on trial.

    Doctor Who

I'm a Cyber-Viking, and this is my friend from Easter Island...

Or "The One With Game of Thrones Maisie Williams." And Vikings. And killer space warriors. This would be more impressive if the liveblog team had a) ever watched Game of Thrones, or b) knew who Maisie Williams was. As neither condition is true this isn't quite so exciting for us as it may be for other people. We just hope it's not the start of the kind of "stars of geekdom" franchise swapping action that you see in the States, when you're often not sure what program you're watching because the producers of drafted in a fan favourite from another show. Surely Mr Moffatt wouldn't do anything that cheap, or indeed, cheesy. The last two-parter was one of the best Doctor Who stories seen for some time, and thankfully fairly low on the hysteria monitor. We like Vikings, and killer space monsters too, and we're sure Maisie Williams is a perfectly fine young lady, so we're looking forward to tonight…

Doctor Who Series 9/ Season 35 episode four

Hello everyone, here be spoilers about the fourth episode of series nine of Doctor Who, but my real concern in typing this spoiler warning is not to warn you, but to let the me who’s gone to the future and read this know what to do when he gets to the past and realises I hadn’t written a review for this week’s episode, and to give that me a warning that I am involved in a bootstrap paradox. I googled it, so you can too.

Sorry Clara, I feel quite unwell...

Ok, so when we left our heroes last week they were all dead except The Doctor - oh, sorry that was the week before. Last week it was The Doctor who was dead... or so his ghost seemed to indicate. Hey, maybe he's what's in the suspended animation box/trunk thingy? Spooky...

We will apparently meet chipmunky (or moley, if you prefer) Prentis (Paul Kaye - Thoros in Game of Thrones) before he died and the Fisher King, screams by Corey Taylor from Slipknot and voice by Peter Serafinowicz (Denarian Saal in Guardians of the Galaxy). The Doctor will die (again!). Joy is unconfined! Onwards....

Our man in Los Angeles, ROBERT CAVE, takes a look at the third episode of the new series of Doctor Who in a new weekly review column

Doctor Who Series 9/ Season 35 Episode 3

Hello everyone, once again here be spoilers for the third episode of series 9 of Doctor Who. If you’ve not seen the episode or dislike spoilers, please step into the Faraday cage of spoiler protection now.

As much as I love the Daleks and Missy, and all the other returning monsters, they are quite limiting in narrative terms. You already know who they are, what they want and what they will do. New monsters are unencumbered with these narrative certainties, and therefore the possibilities for their stories are that much greater.

    Dr Who: Davros Chair Incident

Doctor Steals OAP's Mode of Transport

    by Tripwire Liveblog Team

When we live blogged Dr Who Season 9 Episode 2 last Saturday we little imagined that the BBC would celebrate the Doctor's appalling attitude to the differently-abled (Davros) when he stole what is, frankly, a wheelchair.  The BBC, instead of condemning the peripatetic time-lord, seem to have doubled down on his reprehensible behaviour by circulating more of this awful behaviour. Really! Justice will out - join us for the Live Blog, and what looks like undersea chipmunky ghosts, at 20:25pm on Saturday 3rd of October.

    Fugly Daleks

You remember these chaps, don't you? Where are they now?

Last week we left our hero with everyone he cares about, and at least one person he doesn't, dead. Only, not really. Or at least that's what we're predicting. Will he kill the boy Davros? Will those really ugly Daleks from Season 5 make an appearance? You know, the ones no one speaks about? Will Clara be back? Well, until Christmas she will be. How about the guitar? It's a Yamaha SG Samurai you know. Quite fancy one now I've seen it... sorry, back to Dr Who.

Doctor Who Series 9/ Season 35 episode 1

doctorwho-season9-02As the archetypal long-running family drama series, Doctor Who has always played to multiple audiences, pleasing viewers of widely different ages with varying levels of engagement to the shows narrative, and comfort levels regarding spoilers. It’s a juggling act and one that I feel the series just about carries off, even in an episode like this, packed with an eclectic mixture of references to various old stories you don’t need to have seen to follow the plot (although having done so definitely will enhance your viewing experience).
