Batman: The Dark Knight Master Race The Covers Deluxe Edition
Batman Dark Knight Master Race was one of DC’s most prominent series of the past fifteen years, and despite the comic’s shortcomings, they did commission a lot of fantastic artists to create variant covers for the series. So we now have this rather lovely 176 page hardcover edition reprinting many of these variant images from some of the best comic artists currently working in the industry.
If you are a fan of the likes of Frank Miller, Rafael Albuquerque, Frank Quitely, Bill Sienkiewicz, Dave Gibbons, David Finch, Klaus Janson and Brian Bolland, then this is a great book. As with every project of this nature, some of the images are not to everyone’s taste but arguably there is something for everyone here. Particular standouts are a variant from Frank Miller and Alex Sinclair for issue 5, Dave Johnson’s variant for #1 and the Greg Capullo variant cover to #8. We also get to see cover roughs from the artists who did a run of covers on the series like Capullo and some lovely Jim Lee pencil sketches. Of course, all of the art is presented without the logo and so you can appreciate them as the artist intended.
Considering that this is a hardcover, a US cover price of $25 is pretty reasonable and so this is an ideal gift for fans of Dark Knight, Batman or any of the artists who contributed a sizeable amount of images to Master Race.
Batman: The Dark Knight Master Race The Covers Deluxe Edition is a beautifully designed celebration of the work of some of the best artists in modern comics and should be on the bookshelves of any aficionado of great comic art.
