Going Ape For A Classic
Planet Of The Apes is still one of our favourite sci-fi movies of all time and here’s photographer Dennis Stock’s photos from the Magnum website…
Released in 1968 and dubbed “the year’s most unusual and important picture”, Planet of the Apes was notable for its epic sets, and above all, the special effects work that went into it. It took up to 80 make-up artists, hair stylists and wardrobe staff to realise the scenes in which 200 apes appeared. It’s said that the production of several other Hollywood movies were delayed because all the talent was tied up on Planet of the Apes.
When astronaut Taylor’s spaceship crash-lands on an unknown planet, to his horror, he realizes the planet is ruled by apes much advanced than humans. How will Taylor lead his team to safety?
Release date: 12 April 1968 (United Kingdom)
