Dan Brereton’s Giantkiller Returns

Dan Brereton’s Giantkiller Returns

A Giant Of A Tale

Award-winning comics creator Dan Brereton (Nocturnals) recently launched ( and now fully-funded) a new Kickstarter campaign to collect his 1999 giant monster invasion spectacle Giantkiller, into a 20th Anniversary Expanded Hardcover Edition…

For those of you not yet familiar, Giantkiller is a labor-of-love graphic novel, inspired by his obsession with Kaijū eiga (Japanese monster movies like Godzilla and Gamera) and Samurai cinema, “Along with a fond remembrance of my childhood stomping grounds in the shadow of Mount Diablo.” Dan adds, “The story takes place there—and you’ll thank me later when I warn you—those stomping grounds are almost totally destroyed in the course of the story!”

Brereton feels it’s one of the coolest things he’s done in comics, “It was something that made me ridiculously happy while I was working on it for two years. I can’t believe it’s been two decades. I still think about those characters and still want to do so much more.”

One of the aspects Brereton couldn’t control before—until now—was presenting the story in a larger format. “I always imagined the story being viewed as large as it could be comfortably read on a page. But that was deemed too costly.”
The new book is not only a  hardcover edition—it’s an 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 -inch volume, 240 pages and includes additional story art in the form of a new Epilogue, a big concept gallery of sketches, a large Rogues’ Gallery of guest artist pin-ups and more! The secondary Deluxe Edition boasts a dustcover featuring a new cover painting (unadorned with text or titles), an illustrated slipcase and a color signing plate. Original art rewards are on offer for the duration of the 30 day campaign as well.
An enamel pin is set to accompany Deluxe levels very soon, and Brereton hints at stretch goals for this project potentially bringing readers into some pretty amazing new story territory: new monsters may join the bestiary of daikaiju which appear in the Giantkiller Field Guide to Big Monsters. For now, he’s keeping mum about something he refers to as Codename: Deception Island.

Giantkiller 20th Anniversary Edition will be published by Big Wow Art later this year, but funding and pre-orders are in full swing.
