Not Your Regular Romance
Out this October, Our Heroes Have Always Been Junkies is an original graphic novel by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips and Brubaker previewed a few new pages from it in his online newsletter this week…
Here’s what Brubaker had to say to introduce it:
In the last newsletter, I showed a short teaser trailer we made for our new book, MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN JUNKIES, but this time I’ve got a bunch of actual pages from the book.
I have two reasons for doing this. First, so you can see the amazing art and color that Sean and his son Jake are doing on the book… and second, because this is a hardback, it goes to print fairly soon, actually. In fact, the direct market comic shops will be making their orders for the initial release on MONDAY.
So if you normally buy our stuff at your local comic shop, you should really tell the shop you want a copy when you stop by this week.
I know many stores that do well with our comics are ordering the book in bulk to make sure that their Brubaker/Phillips regulars have copies waiting on release day… but since this is our first original hardback, I really want the shops to understand the demand for it from our readers. That way we’re not all caught off-guard like we were with the CRIMINAL magazines, which many of you had trouble finding. So to avoid a repeat of that, if you want the book, please tell the nice person running the counter at your store, so they can be sure to have it in stock.
So, okay, here’s some pages from the book… And just to be clear, this is not the beginning of the book. I’m trying to spoil as little as possible, so these are a bunch of scenes, which don’t necessarily go one right after another.
Here’s some information on the book as well:
“Sean and I have been talking about doing our version of a romance comic for a long time, so naturally it ended up being a crime story, too. But it’s one that allows me to mine some of my own pop culture obsessions and delve back into my teen years and the kind of trouble you can only get into when you’re young,” said Brubaker. “And coming off a long project like Kill Or Be Killed, it just felt like this was the perfect time for us to experiment with format and finally do an original graphic novel. We’re both very excited to be creating something that’s designed to be seen first in hardback. That’s a new one for us, in nearly 20 years of working together.”
Ever since the death of her junkie mother, Ellie has been obsessed with famous drug addicts. Those tragic artistic souls drawn to needles and pills have been her angels and idols. But when Ellie lands in an upscale rehab clinic where nothing is what it appears to be… she’ll find another more dangerous romance, and find out how easily drugs and murder go hand in hand.
MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN JUNKIES will be presented in a gorgeous hardcover format and is sure to be a seductive coming-of-age story, a pop and drug culture-fueled tale of a young girl seeking darkness… and what she finds there.
MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN JUNKIES (Diamond Code FEB188004, ISBN: 978-1-5343-0846-6) will be available in comic book stores on Wednesday, October 10th and bookstores on Tuesday, 16 October. It can be pre-ordered on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, IndieBound, and Indigo plus all good comic shops.
