Eight Days Of Guillermo del Toro: Day Seven: Pacific Rim

♦ Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape Of Water comes out in UK cinemas on Valentine’s Day and so Tripwire’s editor-in-chief JOEL MEADOWS will be reviewing every film he has made up to this point. Today it’s the turn of his eighth film, Pacific Rim released back in 2013…

Pacific Rim
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Stars: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Diego Klatenhoff, Max Martini

Del Toro took quite a break from film after Hellboy: The Golden Army. Pacific Rim was five years later and unfortunately for me, it was his most disappointing film. Moving away from the realm of horror and fantasy, Pacific Rim depicts a world overrun by monsters who have entered our planet via an interdimensional breach. These huge creatures, called Kaiju, can only be defeated by men in giant robots, called Jaeger. Charlie Hunnam is disgraced Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket who comes back after Stacker Pentecost (Elba) calls on him to re-enter the Jaeger one more time after a huge wall to stop the Kaiju from getting into our dimension has failed.

Pacific Rim displays none of the nuances or subtleties that his previous work showed. Fans of giant monster or huge robot movies will get a kick out of this film but it will leave everyone else cold. Not even the presence of del Toro regular Perlman as Hannibal Chao can save this awful, stupid movie. Elba is okay but Hunnam is very bad here as are most of the cast. Sometimes when a director moves out of his comfort zone, it doesn’t end well. Pacific Rim is apparently a tribute to all the monster movies that the director enjoyed watching with his father when he was a kid but unfortunately for this reviewer, it comes across as a bombastic, puerile bloated exercise. As a fan of his work, Pacific Rim just doesn’t connect with me.

It was a low point in the director’s career but future films have shown that his powers haven’t completely deserted him. Quite the contrary in fact.
