Comics readers and fans of sophisticated suspense rejoice! Creator J.C. Vaughn announced that he is conjuring the collected edition of his critically acclaimed anthology, Bedtime Stories For Impressionable Children, via a Kickstarter campaign writes Tripwire’s contributing writer Scott Braden.
“Whether in television or in print, anthologies have always grabbed my attention,” explained Vaughn. “When I was a kid, it was re-runs of The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits and Night Gallery. It was reprints of the great EC comics like Tales From The Crypt and Weird Science, and then I discovered their natural successors, Warren’s Creepy and Eerie.
“When I was in high school and taking my first creative writing class, I came up with the title for my take on the anthology series with twist endings: Bedtime Stories For Impressionable Children. It was the first screenplay I tried to write. That didn’t go far, but it also never left me.
As time marched on, according to Vaughn, The Twilight Zone movie, several new iterations of the TV show, and a new Outer Limits came and went (and now there’s a new Zone out there once again). Bruce Jones created Alien Worlds and Twisted Tales, very much in the spirit of the EC titles, and Steven Spielberg tried his hand with Amazing Stories. Finally, a new incarnation of Creepy arrived along with glorious reprint volumes of the originals. None of these things did anything to dampen his enthusiasm for Bedtime Stories For Impressionable Children.
“Through my comic book career I became friends with the Gaines family (that’s the estate of EC Comics founder Bill Gaines) and had a chance to assist with the beautiful EC Archives line of books – which we produced at Gemstone Publishing,” added Vaughn. “I also became friends with modern-day owners of Creepy and Eerie. This did nothing but inspire me. Over those same years, I found out many of my favourite creators felt the same way, and they were glad to sign up for Bedtime Stories For Impressionable Children. “Can you believe the team we have for this book? Press releases always read so-and-so is ‘proud to present’ or ‘excited to announce.’ These are comic book clichés, of course, but I’m seriously excited by the creators who have contributed to this volume. Jim Shooter only wrote and created and edited some of the best comics ever. Joe James, whose comic book work I’ve loved, is best known for storyboarding multiple Super Bowl commercials every year. Mark Wheatley? Try Mars, Breathtaker, Blood of the Innocent, and so many more. James ‘Back to Press’ Kuhoric? How about horror credentials that include Freddy vs Jason vs Ash? Writer-director-graphic novelist Robert Tinnell, Tales from the Cherokee’s Gene Gonzales, Captain Action’s Ed Catto… And that’s just the beginning.”
