Spotlight On Portsmouth Comic Con: Rafael Albuquerque

A Master Of The Comic Line

♦ Portsmouth Comic Con takes place 5-6 May 2018 and Tripwire is proud to be a part of it. Here is the sixth spotlight feature on one of its special guests, Rafael Albuquerque…

Rafael Albuquerque is an Eisner award nominated Brazilian comic artist who first got noticed drawing Blue Beetle for DC.

He has been an artist in the American field for over a decade, and it was as cocreator of Vertigo’s American Vampire with writer Scott Snyder, with input from horror legend Stephen King, that really brought him to people’s attention.

In an interview that Tripwire editor-in-chief Joel Meadows did with him back in 2014, he expressed the freedom that switching from superheroes to creator-owned books brought him:”It’s hard to put your personal vision into huge franchises such as Batman or Superman. Don’t get me wrong, I love them, but publishers tend to be very protective about different approaches to their main characters. Vertigo is a place where you are working on your own stuff. You are building something from the ground up, so all that matters is your personal vision. That made me grow a lot as an artist, and also, it let me show my vision to the readers. That also allowed me, at this point in my career, to explore my own vision even in big mainstream characters.”

He has collaborated with Mark Millar on Huck for Image, worked with writer Jeff Lemire on Animal Man for DC and completed a run on DC’s Batgirl Rebirth series with Hope Larson. He also drew part of DC’s All-Star Batman series. 2018 sees him draw the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s A Study In Emerald for a graphic novel published by Dark Horse, out in June 2018.

The artist’s distinct lines make his work instantly recognisable and he is one of the best comic artists of the last fifteen years.

Portsmouth is proud to have Albuquerque as one of its spotlight guests.
