The 1980s were known for “serious” comics: Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns; Alan Moore’s Miracleman and Watchmen; Don Rosa’s The Life and Times of Uncle Scrooge. Wait . . . Uncle Scrooge? You mean the Disney duck? Yep, that’s right, kids . . . you can include The Life and Times of Uncle Scrooge with these other modern masterworks because it was “seriously” fun! Now, the Eisner Award-winning series takes wing at original art size with IDW’s Don Rosa’s The Life and Times of Uncle Scrooge Volume 1 Artist’s Edition.

Don Rosa’s The Life and Times of Uncle Scrooge Volume 1 Artist’s Edition collects the first half of Rosa’s 12-chapter masterpiece, (shot in full color from the artist-extraordinaire’s original black-and-white art) and crafts Uncle Scrooge McDuck’s stories to fit within the original continuity intended by his creator, Carl Barks– while delving deeper into the characters’ personalities and relationships. Within its pages, the artist’s edition (the first of two to be published by IDW and created with Rosa’s complete cooperation) tells the tale of Scrooge McDuck’s rise from a poor shoeshine boy in Glasgow, Scotland, to becoming the richest duck in the world. Both volumes of the artist’s edition also feature a stellar list of guest stars, including a very young Donald Duck, the Beagle Boys, Flintheart Glumgold – as well as P.T. Barnum, Buffalo Bill, Geronimo, Jesse James, Jack London, Czar Nicholas II of Russia, Annie Oakley and President Theodore Roosevelt.

As Publisher’s Weekly put it, the fan-favourite story “turned the moody miser into a plucky adventurer worthy of Tintin.” And, as a special bonus, this artist’s edition allows readers to discover the very genesis of Rosa’s creative method via reprints of storyboard scripts that he presented to his editor before producing the full, finished pages. The artist’s edition, while being a beautifully designed keepsake, also offers readers a journey into mystery and suspense – and is a wonderful addition to the collections of kids of all ages! Enjoy it for yourself.
