Joe Kubert’s Tarzan and The Lion Man and Other Stories Artist’s Edition
Writer/ Artist: Joe Kubert
IDW Publishing

Joe Kubert was a master of comic art and he worked for decades as a writer, an editor and of course an artist. IDW has gone a long way reproducing his impressive legacy in their massive Artist’s Edition books. Tarzan and The Lion Man and other stories is the third and final Tarzan book in IDW’s AE series, reprinting Kubert’s work from DC’s Tarzan title reprinting stories here which originally ran from 1973 to 1974. Tarzan is such a well-known fictional creation and Kubert manages to bring the English lord turned jungle king to life in a way that you couldn’t imagine anyone else doing. As with all of the Artist’s Editions lovingly crafted by editor Scott Dunbier, Joe Kubert’s Tarzan and The Lion Man and Other Stories Artist’s Edition reproduces Kubert’s brilliantly rendered linework with care and consideration. You can stare for hours at many of his pages and there is a dynamism and a kineticism too that very few of his contemporaries managed on the comics page. He also used a graphic simplicity in his art that moves the action along with an elegance and fluidity that was uniquely his.

It is the size and format of IDW’s Artist’s Edition that really gives these books their uniqueness. Kubert understood drama as well as action and for fans of Kubert and comic art, Joe Kubert’s Tarzan and The Lion Man and Other Stories Artist’s Edition is a brilliant way to enjoy his impressive run on DC’s classic series.

He is much missed as a creator and as an advocate of things like creator rights but his legacy continues and it is wonderful that IDW continue to celebrate it. This latest Kubert volume in the Artist’s Edition series continues to cement IDW’s reputation as the keepers of American comics history and is a must-buy for anyone who is a fan or an aficionado of Joe Kubert or Tarzan in comics. Another amazing book from IDW and Scott Dunbier.
