The very sad news reached us yesterday that artist John Paul Leon, who had been ill for the last few years, has just died at the age of 49. Here’s a short obituary for him…
John Paul Leon, who has just died at the age of 49, began his professional career drawing for Dragon magazine at just 16 years old. He moved on to illustrate Static at DC’s imprint Milestone. He then went on to draw series like Earth X at Marvel and eventually worked on a cross section of series like Detective Comics for DC, The Further Adventures of Cyclops And Phoenix for Marvel and The Winter Men for Vertigo/ DC. Most recently he had finished Batman: Creature Of The Night with writer Kurt Busiek for DC. He also worked on style guides for movies like Superman Returns, Batman Begins, Green Lantern and The Dark Knight.
His distinctive linework earnt him fans around the world and it had just been announced he was going to be drawing a Batman/ Catwoman one-off for DC with writer Tom King. Tripwire’s editor-in-chief Joel Meadows interviewed him for the book Masters Of Comics which was published in 2019 by Insight Editions.
