John Constantine Hellblazer All His Engines by Mike Carey and Leonardo Manco

Hellblazer-All-His-Engines-cover-scanThis week’s classic graphic novel pick is John Constantine Hellblazer: All His Engines by Mike Carey and Leonardo  Manco, Vertigo/ DC Comics. Carey wrote an impressive forty issue run of Vertigo’s sarcastic Scouse sorceror but he also wrote this 128 page original graphic novel. Constantine is forced to ally himself with two of the most evil demons and gods in order to save his friend cabbie Chas’s niece Tricia, who has been taken by a demon. This was earlier on in his career but he was already a very impressive writer of modern comics horror by this point. Constantine is at his wisecracking best here, with some great one-liners from Carey, the demons are suitably grotesque and Carey has created a plot that satisfies the most discerning horror comics fan. Manco is a fantastic horror artist too and he manages to bring the settings here to life with rare panache. The character’s portrayal has gone off the rails recently but here he is at his very best. Sadly, it doesn’t look like we’ll be returning to this version of the character anytime soon but recommended for anyone who enjoys intelligent supernatural comics…
